On the Death of Architecture Part 1

I’ve been reading some patchy reports that some companies are making whole Architecture teams redundant. I suppose that is inevitable in the containing theme that I’m certainly seeing. The theme that could be described as “if you cant code, there is no place for you here”.

I suppose its inevitable in the overall pursuit of time to market and where ’doing anything’ is valued more than ‘doing the right thing’. Playing devils advocate, maybe this has been brought on by architects who take too long to complete their work/have too many opinions(!)/say no too often etc. Maybe its because in the world of cloud, the solutions are chosen for you and the cost of change is low. Newsflash – choosing products is only part of the role of a decent architect!

In speaking with a colleague about the role of different ‘strata’ of architects and engineers we discussed three layers – this is fairly standard in the industry. But that, in both of our career experiences, no organisation had the balance of these three layers right. Part 2 explores some different models, with some security architecture flavour (this is a security blog after all!).
